Overview

Peelaway Marine is ideal for the removal of anti-fouling, paints and varnishes on most hull types including GRP, wood, steel and concrete. Its patented water-based formula effectively strips multiple layers of anti-foul in just one application reducing the need for repeated scraping. The easy application and removal ensure there are no airborne toxic particles released and waste can be easily collected to reduce boatyard contaminations. It is also less aggressive on the hull compared to blasting which can reveal Osmotic blisters. The light paste consistency and is easy to apply to vertical surfaces and difficult shapes

Preparation

Ensure the area to be treated is clean and free from dust, debris, and other contaminants to ensure good adhesion.

  • Remove any build of fouling or blistered old anti-fouling coat.
  • Cover any surrounding surfaces with a polythene sheet and masking tape.
  • Always wear suitable protective clothing.
  • Always apply a test patch before using this product, test patches should be completed before undertaking any paint removal project.
  • Mask off a small area and apply the paste at different thicknesses its recommended to do test strips at 1mm, 2mm, and 3mm.
  • Allow to stand from 2 to 48 hours, leave longer for heavy build up over moldings (up to 72 hours).
  • To remove, the spatula should be inserted into the paste and a section gently lifted away. If the original surface is apparent, the test patch can be removed and the surface wiped with a damp sponge. If the paint can still be seen, the test patch should be replaced and re-examined after a few hours.
  • Continue testing until the original surface is no longer apparent to establish correct paste thickness, timing, and the designated paste to be applied.

Before applying the product test a small area on the surface to be treated to ensure you are happy with your results. It is essential that a test area be completed on the surface to be stripped to help ensure that the results will be satisfactory.

  • Stir well before use.
Uneven Surfaces
  • Apply using an airless spray, trowel, or brush working into crevices including on wooden hulls where planks overlap.
  • Ensure raised edges and corners are well covered.
  • Apply a second coat to achieve the final tested thickness.
  • Lay on the poultice blanket with the print on the outside, gently rubbing to exclude trapped air bubbles.
Flat Surfaces
  • Apply using an airless spray, trowel, or brush to the tested thickness
  • Lay on the poultice blanket with the print on the outside, gently rubbing to exclude trapped air bubbles.
  • Dwell time as indicated by the test patch this can be between 30 minutes and 48 hours, do not use for longer than 48 hours.
  • Removal
    • Slide a flat scraper/spatula under the paste and paint, keeping the paste, paint and cover together as much as possible.
    • Any remaining softened coating can be removed by a further application of Peelaway Marine.
    • Certain paints can be softened but not easily removed with the scraper, in which case try rubbing down with a scouring pad or shave hook.
    • Wash off the stripped surface with water and allow to dry thoroughly before recoating.
